Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that Ukraine may risk losing support from the United States if it does not accept a peace plan proposed by the White House to end the war with Russia.
In a national address on Friday, Zelensky said Ukraine now faces a “very difficult choice”—either protect its dignity or risk losing its most important ally. He called this “one of the hardest moments in our history”.
What’s in the US Peace Plan?
The leaked American proposal includes conditions Ukraine had previously rejected, such as:
- Giving up some eastern territories currently under Ukrainian control
- Reducing the size of Ukraine’s army
- Promising not to join NATO
These points favor Russia, and President Vladimir Putin has already said the plan could be a “basis” for peace. Russia says it has received the plan and is ready to show “flexibility”, but also prepared to continue fighting.
US Pushes Ukraine to Accept the Proposal
US President Donald Trump said Zelensky “will have to like” the plan, adding that without it, the war will continue.
The White House has reportedly given Ukraine until November 27 (Thanksgiving) to respond, though the deadline could be extended.
Ukraine depends heavily on US weapons, air defense systems, and intelligence to defend itself from Russian attacks.
Zelensky Says Pressure is Growing
Zelensky warned that Ukraine will face pressure “to weaken and divide us” and urged Ukrainians to remain united.
He said Ukraine will calmly work with the US and other partners to offer “alternative ideas” instead of accepting the current proposal as it is.
He also said he received reassurances of continued support from UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Russia Continues Its Offensive
Despite heavy reported losses, Putin told his commanders that Russia will continue its full-scale invasion until all its goals are reached.
The conflict continues as Russia claims small gains in southeastern Ukraine and Zelensky faces a domestic corruption scandal involving $100 million.
What the Plan Would Mean for Ukraine
According to the leaked draft, the plan would require Ukraine to:
- Withdraw from parts of Donetsk it still controls
- Accept Russian control of Donetsk, Luhansk, and Crimea
- Freeze the front lines in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia
- Limit its military to 600,000 troops
- Allow European fighter jets to be stationed in Poland
In exchange, Ukraine would receive unspecified “security guarantees”.
The plan also includes reintegrating Russia into the global economy by lifting sanctions and possibly restoring Russia to the G7, returning it to the “G8”.
Ukrainians React Strongly
Many Ukrainians have rejected the idea.
A soldier’s widow in Kyiv told the BBC, “This is not a peace plan; it is a plan to continue the war.”
A resident in a Russian-occupied area said, “I hope they will not sign this.”
Russia currently controls about 20% of Ukrainian territory and continues slow advances across the frontli
