Kathmandu. The Nepali Congress Central Working Committee meeting, which had been postponed several times, is finally set to take place today. Chief Secretary of the party’s central office, Krishna Prasad Paudel, informed that the meeting will be held at 1 PM at the party headquarters, BP Memorial Building.
The committee meeting had begun on October 14, and by last Thursday, office-bearers and members had already shared their views.
After that, the meeting was shifted multiple times so leaders could hold informal talks to resolve the dispute over the date of the party’s 15th General Convention.
The main issue is whether to hold the General Convention before or after the upcoming House of Representatives election. Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka, General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma, along with other leaders, are working to find a compromise.
Min Bishwakarma, the head of the party’s publicity department, said that senior leaders are now deeply involved in informal discussions to settle the differences.
According to him, “Leaders, including the Acting President and General Secretaries, are trying to find a middle solution to end the dispute. There is pressure to come up with a compromise proposal by this afternoon.”
Since the meeting began on October 14, two separate proposals for the General Convention date have been submitted:
- General Secretary Gagan Thapa proposed that the General Convention be held from December 31 to January 3.
- Deputy General Secretary Mahendra Yadav countered with a proposal to hold it from May 9 to May 12.
The conflict intensified after one faction supported Thapa’s proposal while the establishment faction backed Yadav’s.
To ease tensions, some leaders, including Dr. Shekhar Koirala and Deputy General Secretary Mahalaxmi Upadhyaya, are working to merge both proposals and create a balanced middle-path option.
